CRISTINA SMUGALA | Anxiety & Trauma Therapist St. Louis & Wentzville, MO
It’s time to let go of what’s holding you back, so you can finally move forward.
If you’ve found your way here, some part of you is already reaching for something deeper and more expansive. A part of you already knows that pushing harder and suppressing more isn’t the answer, but you fear what will happen if you make a change. Maybe the days feel daunting and heavier than they should. You’re holding it all together on the outside while something inside is begging for a moment to set the weight down so you can just be.
In your best attempts to cope, you may have disconnected from your needs and from the core of who you are. Not because you wanted to, but because you had to, to survive. Trauma can come from many sources, including emotional neglect, toxic relationships, demanding high-stakes careers, and moral injuries. Your experiences may have taught you to ignore your instincts, leaving you unsure whether you can trust yourself. At times, you may feel detached and disconnected from others. Our experiences can deprive us of some of our most basic needs, such as connection, playfulness, safety, and trust.
You survived, but you’ve lived in a state of tension, anxiety, and fear that lingered long after what you went through was over. It’s hard for you to see how courageous you are, because you had no choice but to find ways to move forward and function while in distress. You’ve struggled to feel safe enough, secure enough, and free enough to show up authentically in your life and in your relationships in the ways you most want. You’d give anything to fully experience joy, connection, safety, and trust, but you keep sacrificing yourself and your needs for fear that something terrible will happen. You might even tell yourself that what you’re feeling means something is wrong with you. You want to express your needs without fear of judgment, rejection, or abandonment. You want to fully embody and express your authentic self without feeling shame when you take a step toward being seen, known, and vulnerable, but something inside holds you back.
You’ve done everything you were supposed to do. You’ve been kind, generous, and patient. You’ve carried the household, the schedules, and the emotional temperature of every room you walk into. You’ve tried not to be “too much,” not to be selfish, not to make a fuss. Somewhere along the way, you believed all that effort would pay off. And yet here you are, still giving, while the people around you keep expecting more.
The first step is recognizing that you are not broken, you are not alone, and your responses are natural. Trauma symptoms can be understood as survival mechanisms. They are often the body’s and mind’s way of coping with extreme stress or danger, staying alert, and protecting you from possible threats. Hypervigilance helps you spot danger quickly, which is a crucial survival skill in threatening situations. Feeling detached from reality, having trouble feeling emotions, or feeling numb can make it possible to get through situations that would otherwise be unbearable. Intense emotional responses can be the body’s way of processing and reacting to trauma. Difficulty regulating these emotions may come from the need to respond quickly to danger.
I believe that underneath all the heartache, distress, and anxiety you’ve endured, there is a wise and centered you, one that radiates calm and wisdom. Your purest form of Self already exists. All this time it has stayed intact, but it has been buried by your experiences and by the many ways you’ve had to protect yourself.
Imagine saying what you mean without rehearsing it first. Imagine setting a boundary without spending the rest of the day feeling anxious or guilty. Imagine your relationships becoming more honest and more balanced, because you’re no longer quietly absorbing everything.
Therapy is a courageous decision. It is a commitment to a journey of integrated change and restoration. My goal is to guide and support you as you face your fears, to offer a space where you can bring all of who you are and all you've been through, and to support you in living authentically. Building a trusting relationship with a therapist creates a sense of safety, breaks down shame, and provides both comfort and practical help. When this happens, our physiology settles into its natural healing capacity. From there, real well-being can blossom, and we can face the hard things. Therapy is a pathway to overcome, learn, rise, and expand. With gentleness, direction, and compassionate support, it becomes much easier to see that we are moving beyond our old ways of being. Imagine finding compassion and a new understanding of every part of who you are.
Whatever your story, I am passionate about helping you unlock your full potential. I offer a sacred space where you can move past shame, gain a sense of personal empowerment, and rebuild trust in your capacity to heal. You can tap back into your innate goodness and wisdom. Your experiences have shaped you, but they don't have to dictate your future.
Licensed Professional Counselor, EMDR Certified Clinician, EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner
I work with women who are emotionally overwhelmed and high-functioning: the people others rely on, who look like they’ve got it handled but privately feel exhausted, disconnected, or unable to slow down. People come to me for trauma, anxiety, burnout, or relationship patterns that keep repeating. Underneath, the work is usually the same. We look at how your past shaped the way you survive now, and we gently build a life where you no longer have to earn the right to exist.
My hope is that, over time, you begin to feel more at home in yourself. That you can speak up for what you need, trust that you’re worthy of love and respect just as you are, and face life’s uncertainties without losing yourself in the process. Change can feel uncomfortable, especially when the ways you’ve learned to cope have helped you get through so much. We’ll take it one step at a time, finding new ways forward that feel meaningful and manageable for you. I believe therapy should be a purposeful investment in your well-being, one that helps you make meaningful progress in a way that honors your individual needs and pace.
I know this work from the inside out. For years, I was the “nice one”: the good daughter, the dependable friend, the generous partner who never seemed to need anything, and the high-achieving overfunctioner. I didn’t realize how disconnected I was from my own emotions and needs until my body started speaking up for me. Learning to build a healthy relationship with my own emotions changed everything. I became more confident, more decisive, more assertive, and healthier. Sitting across from women, I’ve seen the same pattern again and again: once women reclaim their misunderstood emotions, they reclaim their power.
I’m still a kind, generous person. I’m also a force to be reckoned with. We contain multitudes, and healing happens when we stop leaving parts of ourselves behind.
And you didn't choose it as an adult. You built it as a child, in a home where someone else's emotions took up all the room. You became an expert at reading the temperature of a room before you even walked in. You learned early that your job was to be easy: no needs, no mess, no extra weight. Your parent may have been competent at everything except feelings, so love came as logistics and criticism, and rarely as comfort. You were the one who held it all together. You were the peacekeeper, translating the conflict, keeping the younger kids steady, or carrying a secret no child should ever have been asked to hold. For some, nothing easy to name happened at all. You were fed, clothed, educated, and praised for your accomplishments. But no one ever asked how you were. And when you were upset, it became a problem to be corrected rather than a feeling to be understood.
So you did what intelligent children do. You worked out the terms and adapted.
You held up your end of that deal for years. It got you everything on your résumé. It also cost you the ability to rest, to be known, and to trust that you’d still matter if you ever stopped producing. Those responses were never flaws. They were your body’s way of protecting you. The vigilance, the numbness, the bracing: they made sense. They kept you moving through what you had to move through. You are a person who adapted.
I know the world you move through, because I understand what it asks of high-achieving people like you. The morning that starts before your feet touch the floor, with the mental list of responsibilities already running. I understand the hidden cost of being the person who holds everything together. The constant low hum of keep going, don’t drop anything, don’t let them see you falter. The tightness that gathers in your stomach when the day asks for more than you have left.
You’ve spent years excelling, performing, and staying in control while the world spun faster around you, and you’ve proven again and again how strong you are. But strength was never meant to feel like holding your breath. What you deserve now is different. Not another way to push harder, but the chance to bring the intensity down, to steady yourself, and to root so deeply that you can finally thrive instead of simply endure.
I See You, and I’m Here to Help
Imagine a space where you don’t have to explain, perform, or apologize for how you feel. Where your story is met with warmth instead of judgment, and where the tender, guarded parts of you are treated as sacred rather than broken. Healing doesn’t mean becoming someone new. It means coming home to the Self that’s been waiting underneath.
I use an integrative approach to restore a sense of calm, centered connection between the brain and body. I believe that with support and guided practices, we can land more deeply in the safety of an embodied, regulated Self.
Stability gives us the capacity to go deeper. From steady ground, we can begin to look at what lies beneath the surface and explore where your patterns came from. Real relief doesn’t come from managing symptoms more efficiently. It comes from finally understanding what’s underneath them. We’ll gently untangle the roots of perfectionism, overfunctioning, and self-suppression. We’ll shift your experience from simply coping with the day to fundamentally changing how you relate to your history and to yourself, so you can break the cycle of self-abandonment.

Beneath the exhaustion and the vigilance, there is a Self in you that is steady, wise, and whole. Much of this work is clearing the way back to it. The hope here isn’t a more efficient way to cope. It’s a life where you no longer need the coping at all. Therapy is not just about the absence of pain. It is about the presence of possibility. As you take in these new ways of being, you’ll find you can lead and love without constantly bracing for impact. You’ll begin to trade the exhaustion of survival for the clarity of embodiment, and finally reclaim the power that has always been yours. This work is not about becoming less capable. Your competence is real, and it’s yours. The goal is for it to stop being the only way you’re allowed to exist.
You’ve spent your whole life being the one who holds it together: for a parent who couldn’t, for a family that needed you to, for a profession that rewarded it. Where do you get to be held?
Using trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy I offer therapy that doesn’t only feel good in the room; it creates sustainable change. Together, we’ll explore the nervous system patterns that have been holding you back and turn that understanding into real, workable strategies for moving through your full and demanding life with more clarity and calm.
Caring for your inner world was never only about easing stress or tending old wounds. When you feel grounded, steady, and sure of yourself, that steadiness moves through everything you do: your work, your relationships, and the future you’re still building. My hope is that you can keep showing up as the remarkable person you already are, while finally leaving room for joy, rest, and a life that feels more spacious and authentic.
You’ve already done the impossible. Let me help you make your life more sustainable and far more rewarding.
Everything I do is shaped by a few core values that guide how I show up in the room with you. I believe healing is an active, honest process. I’ll meet you with both gentleness and truth, honoring how far you’ve come while making room for who you’re still becoming. My caseload is small by design. In a season when everyone needs a piece of you, you deserve one hour that’s completely yours, with a therapist who’s spacious, present, and fully invested. Real presence. Lasting change. You’ve already proven your resilience a thousand times over. My approach helps you carry that strength differently, with less bracing and more ease. There’s no version of you that needs editing before you walk in. This is a space for the real you, met with genuine presence and no pretense. Every person, story, and identity is welcome here. You deserve care that sees and respects all of who you are. You deserve both real clinical skill and real warmth. I bring rigorous, evidence-based care and a compassionate, human presence, because you should never have to choose between the two.

Whether you’re the one everyone leans on, the person who holds it all together, or someone who’s finally ready to stop running on empty, you deserve a space where you don’t have to perform. The patterns you’re dealing with now often go back further than the present moment. These include overfunctioning, traumatic stress, trouble slowing down, and the sense that your worth depends on how much you carry.
Often the very traits that made you successful (the drive, the self-reliance, the instinct to hold everything together) took root long before your career did. Many of the people I work with grew up being the responsible one, reading the room, or meeting everyone’s needs but their own. That built real strengths. It also built patterns that can quietly wear you down: overfunctioning, trouble resting, relationships where you give far more than you receive, and a nervous system that never fully powers off.
Getting started shouldn’t come with confusion or fine print. This is an investment in your peace, not one more thing to figure out.
